Rheinhessen has more vineyard area than any other German region, spread over rolling farmland rather than steep slopes. Silvaner has a long history here, and in recent decades a generation of young growers has moved the region's reputation from bulk wine to dry quality wine.
Worms and Mainz, together with Speyer, are the ShUM cities, centres of medieval Ashkenazi Judaism inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2021. Liebfraumilch took its name from a church vineyard in Worms, and Jewish merchant houses such as Sichel in Mainz and Langenbach in Worms helped make German wine an export brand.
The scale of the region makes it the natural source of grapes and contract capacity for anyone planning kosher production in Germany.
