Valul lui Traian

South-western Moldova, the country's warmest region, historically linked to fortified and dessert wines.

Country
Moldova
Climate
Warm continental, the southernmost region
Main varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot · Fetească Neagră · Muscat · Traminer

The name refers to an ancient earthen wall crossing southern Bessarabia. The region is the warmest and driest in the country.

Its historical specialty was sweet and fortified wine, which ties directly to the Jewish wine market of the Russian Empire: sweet wine kept longer, travelled better and suited ritual use.

Today the emphasis has shifted towards dry reds, though old Muscat plantings and the dessert tradition remain.
