Villány lies below the Villány hills in Baranya county, close to the Croatian border. Mediterranean influence gives it the warmth that late-ripening Bordeaux varieties need, and Cabernet Franc has become its signature, sold as Villányi Franc.
German-speaking settlers arrived in the eighteenth century, and by its end most of the village's population was of Swabian origin; the cellar rows and family estates still reflect that. The Siklós subzone is cooler and better suited to whites such as Olaszrizling.
Its dense cluster of family estates is a useful comparison for Dealu Mare: similar warmth and a similar focus on reds, but a far more developed model of wine tourism and direct sales.
