Burgenland is Austria's warmest wine region. Lake Neusiedl moderates temperatures, and the humidity around its shores favours the botrytis behind the sweet wines of Rust and the Seewinkel; the hills of central Burgenland are the home of Blaufränkisch.
After the Jews were expelled from Vienna in 1670, Prince Esterházy took them under his protection in seven communities, the Sheva Kehillot: Eisenstadt, Mattersdorf, Kobersdorf, Lackenbach, Frauenkirchen, Kittsee and Deutschkreutz. Several of them are wine villages, and Jewish families of the region took part in the wine trade.
Kosher wine is made here again today: the Hafner family estate in Mönchhof, near Frauenkirchen, produces kosher wines.
