Vrancea county has more vineyards than any other in Romania: vines cover over a tenth of its territory. The main centres are Panciu, with around 8,100 hectares, Odobești, with around 7,000, and Cotești.
Historically the county supplied everyday Moldavian whites and Băbească Neagră, a light, early-drinking red. Panciu is also known for sparkling wine.
Scale matters for anyone planning a kosher run or a private label. Grapes and bulk wine are available in quantities that small regions cannot offer, and the task shifts from finding fruit to selecting it by measurement.
