Shabo lies on the Dniester estuary about 7 km downstream from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, in Odesa oblast. It was a Tatar settlement known as Acha-abag, the lower vineyards, and stood almost empty after the Russian annexation of Bessarabia in 1812.
In 1822 Alexander I invited settlers from the Swiss canton of Vaud, led by Louis-Vincent Tardent, specifically to cultivate vines here. The colony gave the area its winemaking identity, and since 2023 Chabag has been protected as an appellation of origin and Acha-Abag as a geographical indication.
For this site Shabo matters twice: as part of the Bessarabian wine economy described in the history section, and as the Ukrainian side of the Dniester, close to Moldova's Ștefan Vodă.
