Drăgășani

A belt of hills along the Olt in Oltenia, known for indigenous varieties bred and preserved at its research station.

Drăgășani stretches for about 65 km along the Olt in Vâlcea county, on hills between 200 and 500 metres. The river valley tempers extremes and gives long, even ripening.

The local research station bred Novac and Negru de Drăgășani and selected Crâmpoșie Selecționată from an old local grape. Together they give the region a profile that no other Romanian area can copy. A museum of vine and wine has operated in the town since 1974.

Most estates here are small or medium-sized, which makes the region a useful place to see how boutique producers handle bottling and oxygen management on a limited budget.
