The Douro was demarcated in 1756 under the Marquis of Pombal, which makes it one of the first regulated wine regions in the world. Its terraces cut into schist were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in 2001.
Port is made by stopping fermentation with grape spirit, which keeps sweetness and raises alcohol. For kosher port the spirit itself must be kosher, so the supply chain covers not only the wine but also the brandy added to it; kosher ports such as Porto Cordovero are on the market.
The region's dry red wines, made from the same varieties, have grown quickly in recent decades and are a more straightforward starting point for a kosher run than fortified wine.
